TRIANGLE Housing have released plans for 64 new housing units on Church Street and Edenmore Road in Limavady.
The proposals include 24 units at the Old Distillery Gardens and 40 units on Edenmore Road.
The latter will include bungalows and wheelchair access to accommodate older people and wheelchair-users.
The units are planned to house up to 180 individuals through Triangle Housing.
East Londonderry MLA Claire Sugden has welcomed the dozens of planned new social housing units across her constituency, following her lengthy and consistent appeals on behalf of constituents.
As well as Limavady, in Coleraine a 28-unit social housing development for up to 72 people over 55s is planned for the Portstewart Road, and in Abbey Street in the town, work has already begun on 13 active elderly apartments.
“My office has, for many months – if not years now – been inundated with calls from increasingly desperate constituents who simply cannot find a place to live,” Ms Sugden said.
“Myself and my staff have been in contact with the Department for Communities, private contractors and a variety of charities and community organisations in order to try to help, so these new homes – which will still be vastly over-subscribed – are a good step in the right direction.
“The level of social housing need in this area has been enormous for years but has grown significantly in recent months and years.
“There will understandably be planning issues raised by a number of local residents for each of these developments.
“My office has also been dealing with complaints arising from construction issues and other associated concerns.
“Any required alterations may have to be made so as to take seriously and accommodate the genuine considerations put forward by existing residents.
“But ultimately, people are in desperate need of housing across East Londonderry and across the north coast in general. Steps must, and seem finally to have started, being taken to resolve our long-standing and growing housing crisis.”
Cllr Brenda Chiver's also welcomed the local plans saying: “I would encourage the community to attend an event on the proposals which will be held at Roe Valley Leisure Centre on Tuesday 26 September between 4pm - 6pm.”
