Roadworks for the ‘Active Travel Scheme’ along the A2 Clooney Road will continue into 2026, a DfI spokesperson has confirmed.

EAST Londonderry MLAs Claire Sugden and Alan Robinson have joined forces with MP Gregory Campbell to raise concerns with the Infrastructure Minister about continued roadwork disruption in Ballykelly and the need to move forward with a bypass.
Roadworks on the A2 Clooney Road between Ballykelly and Greysteel are set to continue into 2026, much to the “frustration and anger” of road users and residents, said Mr Robinson.
The road has been hit by tailbacks from the ‘Active Travel Scheme’ which plans to widen a footpath so it can be used as a cycle path.
Originally described as a 33-week scheme, the scheme was due to begin in late 2024, but was deferred until early 2025 and is due for completion next year, a DfI spokesperson said.
Road users face delays of up to 40 minutes at peak times.
KEY ROUTE
MLA Sugden said that frustration is only growing amongst road users and strengthening the case for a bypass.
“It is not acceptable that this key route is held up by constant traffic management,” Ms Sugden added.
“Parents are delayed on the school run, people commuting to work are stuck in long queues and the frustration is only growing.”
At her recent meeting with Minister Kimmins in Ballykelly, Ms Sugden highlighted that while some disruption is to be expected, in Ballykelly it has dragged on for years and is now due to continue until 2026.
“That is too much for residents to live with,” she said. “It only strengthens the case for a bypass. This is a strategic route, and it deserves the proper infrastructure.
“Through my questions I want the Minister to spell out how often traffic management has been in place in Ballykelly in recent years, whether her Department has looked at the wider impact of congestion, and when the new Transport Strategy will be published.
“That strategy will decide if and when the bypass is taken forward, and people here deserve clear answers.
